Legitimate Interest Assessment (LIA) Summaries

Legitimate Interests

Lens Health Technologies uses Legitimate Interests as the lawful basis for certain technical processing within FocusAI under UK GDPR.

FocusAI processes healthcare-related documents and structured data to enable secure search, retrieval, and summarisation of clinical and operational information for authorised users in care and healthcare settings.

The purpose of this processing is to:

  • Help healthcare professionals quickly access relevant patient and operational information
  • Reduce time spent searching across multiple systems
  • Improve the accuracy and completeness of information retrieval
  • Support timely and informed decision-making
  • Improve continuity and quality of care through better data accessibility

We have assessed that we have a legitimate interest in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare information systems. This processing is carried out in a controlled, secure environment and is limited to authorised use only.

We have also assessed that this processing is necessary, as the same outcomes cannot reasonably be achieved through manual processes or simpler technical approaches without significantly reducing performance, accuracy, and usability.

We have carried out a balancing assessment to ensure that these interests do not override the rights and freedoms of individuals. To protect individuals, we apply strict safeguards including access controls, encryption, audit logging, and data minimisation.

Because FocusAI processes health data (special category data), additional legal requirements under Article 9 UK GDPR also apply. These are met separately under health and social care lawful bases used by the organisations operating the system.

In summary

  • Legitimate Interests is used for the supporting technology layer (search, indexing, retrieval)
  • Strong safeguards are in place to protect data and limit access
  • Health data processing is additionally governed under UK GDPR Article 9 requirements
  • The system is designed to support better, safer, and more efficient healthcare delivery
